GameU - Welcome to GameU: Tips for Beginning Developers, Room 106
Let's kick off another great year of GameU! The way games get made is constantly evolving. To get started we'll bring everyone onto the same page with a practical discussion about which classic advice still holds true as ever, which has fallen somewhat out of date in light of technology or developer culture, and what are some seemingly new ways that people are getting their start. This won't be a technical talk, but will include pros and cons for several programming language options to help attendees find one that works for them. Similarly this isn't specifically an art talk, but we'll discuss changing trends, techniques, and tools in indie game development that can help you fill in your game's art needs with greater confidence. We'll discuss sustainable strategies and process for working your way into the indie game ecosystem in a way that maximizes your learning and positioning without taking on undue financial risk.

GameU - KEYNOTE: Mental Health for GameDev Community, Room 106
Working in the games industry, it can often feel like there are a thousand things to do which are more urgent than looking after your own mental health. However, there is ample evidence which confirms that common conditions, such as depression, anxiety, stress, burnout, and social isolation, can impact on your work and your wider health. A systematic stigma against mental illness has resulted in many people feeling unable to speak out about their experiences or get help, causing a long term impact to their wellbeing.

GameU - Talking About YOUR Game (Workshop), Room 106
Whether you've already got a game you're working on (woooo!), one you've recently finished (congrats!), or simply want to be better prepared for when you reach that point (you will!), you're going to have to talk about it. Although this sounds like such an easy thing to do, after all you know your game inside and out, it's an extremely normal thing to struggle with. Many developers feel weird about marketing and find it uncomfortable to "bother" other people about their game, especially strangers. In this session we'll show how that's backwards, how done right talking about your game is part of a bigger picture about finding the audience fit for who will most appreciate that you helped them find out about it. To do this we'll partly be incorporating breakouts to strategize about ways to make your game's case more efficiently and effectively.
